Set up in three steps

Pick the app
Create a free PipMCP account and choose Pencil Spaces from the app list.

Paste your key
Paste your Pencil Spaces API key. You need a usage-based or Enterprise Pencil Spaces account and must be an Institution Admin. In Spaces Manager (my.pencilapp.com) open Settings > API Key > Generate and copy the key right away, since it is shown only once.

Add the link to your AI
You get a personal MCP link. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor:
1. Click your name, then Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector.
2. Paste your link as the Remote MCP server URL.
3. Switch it on from the + menu in a chat.

Questions

What can the AI do in Pencil Spaces?

The AI can list and read Spaces, users, events, programs, cohorts, recordings, transcriptions, session analytics and reports, attendance and user availability. It can create and update Spaces and events, change who is in a Space, record RSVPs, update users and invite new ones. It can also cancel or delete events if you switch those tools on.

Does the AI see my Pencil Spaces API key?

No. Your Pencil Spaces API key is encrypted at rest and never shown to the AI. After you save it, it is not shown again, not even to you. The AI only sees the results of the tools it calls.

Can I control what the AI is allowed to do?

Yes. You choose which tools are switched on, so you can start read-only. Cancelling or deleting an event cannot be undone, and inviting a user sends an email, so these can require your approval before they run. Every tool call is logged.

Does it work with ChatGPT?

Yes. In ChatGPT go to Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced and turn on Developer mode, then add your PipMCP link. Developer mode needs a paid ChatGPT plan: Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise. The same link also works in Claude (Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector), Cursor and other MCP clients.

What does it cost?

PipMCP has a free plan with no credit card required. Paid plans bill per completed task. You also need your own Pencil Spaces account, and API access needs a usage-based or Enterprise Pencil Spaces account.

Will students get emails when the AI makes changes?

Only when an action sends one. Inviting a user sends an invitation email. When the AI creates a Space or adds people to it, the notify_invitees setting decides whether invitees are emailed. Attendees may see changes to an event. Setting those tools to require approval lets you check each one first.
