Connect Claude & ChatGPT to Dropbox

Ask your AI to find a file in Dropbox, show what is in a folder, or share something with a link. It can search by name and content, create folders, move, rename and copy files, and restore an earlier version of a file. It can also create shared links and file requests, save a file from a web address into Dropbox and check how much storage you use.

Free plan, no credit card. Takes about a minute.

Try asking

  • “Find the signed contract for Acme, it is a PDF.”

The AI searches your Dropbox for Acme, filtered to PDF files, and lists the matches with their paths and last modified dates.

  • “What is in the /Invoices/2026 folder?”

It lists the files and subfolders in that folder, and pages through the rest if the folder is large.

  • “Share the Q3 report with a link that expires on Friday.”

It creates a shared link for the file with an expiry date. Anyone with a public link can open the file until then. Expiry dates need a paid Dropbox plan.

What your AI can do

Find and browse files

Search files and folders by name and content, filter by folder or file type, list folders and read a file's size, date and id.

Organise and restore

Create folders, move, rename, copy and delete files, list earlier versions of a file and restore one of them.

Share and collect

Create, list and turn off shared links, get temporary download links, and create and list file requests so others can upload to you.

  • “Ask the client to upload their receipts to /Clients/Acme/Receipts.”

It creates a file request with a title and that destination folder, and gives you the link to send to the client.

  • “Someone overwrote budget.xlsx yesterday. Put back the version from Monday.”

It lists the file's earlier versions with dates and sizes, then restores the one you pick as the current file.

  • “Move everything from last year's project into /Archive/2025.”

It creates the archive folder if needed and moves the files or folders to their new paths.

21 tools for Dropbox

These tools are switched on when you connect. You can switch any of them off, or require your approval before it runs.

  • check_save_url_statusCheck whether a save-from-URL job has finished, using the `async_job_id` returned by save_url_to_dropbox.
  • copy_fileChanges dataCopy a file or folder from `from_path` to `to_path` (the full path of the copy including its name).
  • create_file_requestVisible to othersCreate a file request so others can upload files into a Dropbox folder. Needs a `title` shown to uploaders and a `destination` folder; optional instructions and deadline. Returns a link to share with uploaders.
  • create_folderChanges dataCreate a new folder at `path`, e.g. "/Clients/Acme". Check with search or list first to avoid duplicates.
  • create_shared_linkVisible to othersCreate a shared link for a file or folder by `path`. Optional settings: who can open it (public, team, password), viewer or editor access, and an expiry date. Anyone with a public link can open the item.
  • delete_fileDeletesDelete a file or folder by `path`; deleting a folder removes everything inside it. Items go to Dropbox's deleted files, where they can be restored for a limited time depending on the plan.
  • get_current_accountGet the connected Dropbox account's name, email, account type and country. Use to confirm which Dropbox you are working in.
  • get_file_metadataGet details for one file or folder by `path` or id: name, size, last modified date and id.
  • get_space_usageGet how much storage the Dropbox account uses and how much it has in total.
  • get_temporary_linkGet a direct download link for a file by `path`. The link works for about 4 hours and anyone with it can download the file.
  • list_file_requestsList the file requests on the account, with their titles, destination folders, deadlines and upload counts.
  • list_file_revisionsList earlier versions of a file by `path`, with each version's rev, date and size. Use before restoring an older version.
  • list_folderList the files and subfolders in a folder by `path` (use "" for the top of the Dropbox, or a path like "/Invoices/2026"). Set `recursive` to include all subfolders.
  • list_folder_continueGet the next page of a folder listing using the `cursor` from a previous listing that returned has_more true.
  • list_shared_linksList existing shared links, optionally only those for one file or folder `path`.
  • move_fileChanges dataMove or rename a file or folder from `from_path` to `to_path` (the new full path including the name).
  • restore_file_revisionChanges dataRestore a file to an earlier version using its `rev` (from list_file_revisions) and `path`. The restored version becomes the current file.
  • revoke_shared_linkVisible to othersTurn off a shared link by its `url` so nobody can open the item with it any more. This cannot be undone; a new link would have a different address.
  • save_url_to_dropboxChanges dataDownload a file from a public web `url` and save it into Dropbox at `path` (including the file name). Runs in the background; check progress with check_save_url_status.
  • search_filesSearch files and folders by name and content with `query`. Optional filters: folder `path`, file extensions (e.g. pdf, xlsx), file name only, or sort by last modified.
  • search_files_continueGet the next page of search results using the `cursor` from a previous search that returned has_more true.

Set up in three steps

  1. 1

    Pick the app

Create a free PipMCP account and choose Dropbox from the app list.

  2. 2

    Paste your key

Create your own Dropbox app, paste its App key and App secret, then sign in with Dropbox once. At dropbox.com/developers/apps click Create app, choose Scoped access and Full Dropbox, and name it. On the Settings tab add https://pipmcp.com/oauth/callback under Redirect URIs. On the Permissions tab tick account_info.read, files.metadata.read and .write, files.content.read and .write, sharing.read and .write, and file_requests.read and .write, then click Submit. Copy the App key and App secret from the Settings tab.

  3. 3

Add the link to your AI

You get a personal MCP link. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor:

    1. Click your name, then Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector.
    2. Paste your link as the Remote MCP server URL.
    3. Switch it on from the + menu in a chat.

Questions

What can the AI do in Dropbox?

It can search files and folders, list folders, read file details and earlier versions, list shared links and file requests, and check your account and storage use. It can create folders, move, rename, copy and delete files, restore an earlier version, create and turn off shared links, get temporary download links, create file requests and save a file from a web address into Dropbox.

Does the AI see my Dropbox credentials?

No. Your App key, App secret and sign-in tokens are encrypted at rest and never shown to the AI. After you save them, they are not shown again, not even to you. The AI only sees the results of the tools it calls.

Can I control what the AI is allowed to do?

Yes. You choose which tools are switched on, so you can start with search and browsing only. Deleting a folder removes everything inside it, turning off a shared link cannot be undone, and a public link lets anyone open the item, so those tools can require your approval before they run. Every tool call is logged.

Does it work with ChatGPT?

Yes. In ChatGPT, open Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced, turn on Developer mode and add your PipMCP link. Developer mode needs a paid ChatGPT plan: Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise. The same link also works in Claude (Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector), Cursor and other MCP clients.

What does it cost?

Dropbox connects with OAuth, and OAuth connections need the PipMCP Pro plan or above. PipMCP also has a free plan with no credit card, but it does not include this connection. Paid plans bill per completed task. You also need your own Dropbox account.

Does it work with a Dropbox team account?

Yes, but on team accounts the AI works in your own folder, not in the shared team space. It can search, organise and share the files you have there. You can ask it which Dropbox account it is connected to at any time.
